Two problems that consumers should continue to be vigilant about:
1) Products may contain a number of hechsherim, only one of which certifies the product for Pesach. It is not uncommon for the year-round hechsher to be one that is acceptable to a large audience but the one certifying just for Pesach to be one that not all accept (i.e. Rabbanut of a given small Israeli city, or unknown foreign hasghacha).
2) Especially in supermarket kosher isles, look for the exact same product stocked in both Kosher for Pesach and not Kosher for Pesach forms in the same “Passover” location.
The COR (Canada) provides the following common examples that were found:
1) PRIGAT – both Pesach and non-Pesach varieties are being stocked together on the Passover shelves in several supermarkets (see pictures above)
2) PEREG – Many Pereg spices are not kosher for Pesach and are being stocked on the Passover Aisles. I was in Metro this morning myself and again saw this problem.
3) GEFEN – We have found Gefen Vanilla Sugar and Gefen Frozen Garlic Cubes that are not kosher for Pesach being stocked together with the matching Pesach products.
4) KINERET – Frozen latkes are not kosher for Pesach and are being stored in freezers labeled Kosher for Passover together with Pesach products.
5) KLEIN’S NATURAL’S – Packages of nuts that are not for Pesach are being stocked together with the similar kosher for Pesach variety.
6) LIEBER’S – Strawberry Jel, Lemon Juice and Whole Tomatoes that are not for Pesach have been accidentally supplied to many stores.
7) HADDAR – Haddar Apple Sauce and Pineapple Chunks that are not for Pesach are also out there!
For the sake of brevity, we have not listed all of the problems that were found. Wherever possible, COR has contacted the store to make them aware of the issues.
Please be careful when shopping for Pesach to ensure that you do not purchase the wrong product by accident.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a chag kasher v’sameach,
(Please see the attached advertisement for Yogenfruz UServe (Chabad Gate) which will be open for Pesach. Yogenfruz UServe was inadvertently omitted from the list in the 2013 Kosher CORner Passover Guide and we apologize for this omission.)
