(Written by a concerned citizen)
It has come to our attention that many people have forgotten or perhaps they did not know that in Cleveland Heights garbage should be placed on the tree lawn no earlier than 7:00 pm on the night before ones assigned pick-up day. This is also the case on those occasions when garbage pick-up is shifted by a day (i.e. National Holidays). Regular Garbage Pick-Up, Thursday, July 4th will be FRIDAY, July 5th.

Concerned citizen, I have been in touch with Clev. Hts in the past. They agreed that many people especially the elderly or those who work night cannot wait til 7 to put out their trash. It is dark at that time in winter. 5 pm is far more reasonable

I am not sure what this “concerned citizen” is concerned about.
Are they concerned that this week people might mistakenly put their garbage out a day early? If that is their concern, thanks for the reminder.
Or, perhaps they are concerned that people are putting their garbage out too early even during a regular week. If that is the concern, I am not sure why this really concerns this “concerned citizen.” Sometimes there are different reasons why this 7:00 rule is not very practical. For instance, if a family will be leaving town and cannot wait until 7:00. Or perhaps a family might be away for the day and will not get him until after dark. I personally would not take out the garbage when it is dark outside. Who knows what one can meet by his garbage cans!
And sometimes people are doing spring cleaning. It is not practical to only clean on Wednesdays. What should families do with all their garbage until garbage day? It is not always practical to leave it in the house or garage.
As an aside, I have personally contacted the city a number of times about their garbage collection policy. Leaving out garbage bags at night, even if only after 7 p.m., attracts all kinds of animals and pests. Why can’t we leave the garbage in the cans like our neighboring cities? They tell me that they are afraid of garbage cans blowing around the streets on a windy day. As far as I am concerned, that is much less of an annoyance than the growing pest population in our neighborhood.
Love It says
Gotta love Cleveland Heights. One winter a few years ago we had a pet rabbit that we kept in a hutch in the back yard. One day a cop rang the doorbell telling us that we had to bring it inside or get rid of it. He cited a statute saying that you’re not allowed to raise livestock in Cleveland Heights. I hardly consider a pet bunny rabbit as livestock. Besides, it was already wearing a rabbit fur coat.

I wanted to share that the CH Sanitation Dept is really excellent.
They always take my many bags, lots of recycling, and even my big and dirty clunky items. Even the bags that I know skunks got into and had a few holes and likely spilled some trash were taken away and they probably even cleaned the mess. They happily take the tons of trash that we generate during Yom Tov and even help us with special collections before Pesach and other holidays. Their staff is really friendly and always greet my children and the many children along the way who are fascinated by garbage trucks. They have picked up my bundles of branches that were not tied and my rain-soaked falling-apart brown bags.

I think everyone agrees that the Sanitation workers are great!! They pick up everything, even the mess made by the pests at night. And they do it with a smile! It’s the city policy that needs to be reviewed. Why can’t we have a system where the garbage stays in the cans, so the workers do not have to deal with the mess in the first place?!?

With all due respect to the concerned citizen, most people are not guilty as charged. I cannot say I have never left out my garbage early, but I know my neighbors do not appreciate it, and especially Erev Pesach time, I have more garbage than my three cans can handle. Seven O’clock is around the time most people are getting home from work – can’t spare 10 minutes to take out the garbage then? On occasion, circumstances dictate taking out the garbage early, most neighbors are understanding, (and will assume there is a reason). Just don’t do it on a regular basis (which most people seem to understand), and we’ll all be OK
