The Israeli Legal System by Marcia Gelpe.
“This book is about the legal system of the country of Israel. The Israeli legal system would be generally understandable to an American lawyer. This book emphasizes the things that are different. This approach supplies the student with the ability to understand the features of Israeli law that would not otherwise be familiar. It also gives the best grounds for comparative law analysis. Most chapters describe the differences between Israeli and American law and investigate the reasons for and the implications of these differences”–Page xv.
The History and Religious Heritage of Old Cairo : Its Fortress, Churches, Synagogue, and Mosque edited by Carolyn Ludwig and Morris Jackson.
This beautiful oversize book is worth reading for the fifty page chapter entitled “The Jewish Heritage of Old Cairo.” The full page color photographs of the restored Ben Ezra Synagogue are breathtaking. The wood and gilded aron ha-kodesh (ark) the marble mastaba, under which it is believed the stone on which Moses sat when he came out of Pharaoh’s place to pray, was found and the ornate magen david carved in gypsum are stunning. Recommended for patrons interested in Cairo and the Cairo genizah.
The Jewish Confederates by Robert N. Rosen.
“Rosen reveals the remarkable breadth of Southern Jewry’s participation in the war and the strength of Jewish commitment to the Confederate cause. Intrigued by the apparent irony of their story as a people who at Passover annually celebrated their own escape from slavery yet vigorously defended the Confederacy, Rosen weaves a surprisingly complex chronicle that dispels common misconceptions about the Confederacy, its leadership and soldiers, and its Jewish population.” – Jacket
Kosher : Private Regulation in the Age of Industrial Food by Timothy D. Lytton
“Kosher is one terrific book. It’s a wonderfully entertaining account of the squabbles, finger-pointing, and cutthroat competition that turned kosher certification from scandalous corruption to a respectable—and highly profitable—business.” Marion Nestle from the back cover Recommended for those interested in the history of kashrus from Medieval times to the present.
