Shannon Road Ice Cream is excited to introduce our new line of flavors and novelties, “Ice Cream for a Difference”. This week’s flavor is: TOFFEE BAR ICE CREAM. Two dollars of every $5 pint sold will support pediatric cancer research.
Why have we chosen this cause to support? As many of you know, our daughter, Tzippy, was treated for Stage IV Neuroblastoma at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. She was fortunate to participate in a number of trials and received therapies made possible by funds from organizations like Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, Alex’s Lemonade Stand, and St. Baldrick’s Foundation, amongst many others. Across the country, people are raising money to support the researchers and medical professionals who have dedicated themselves to saving children’s lives, and we want to be part of that effort. How? By doing one of the things that we do best: MAKE ICE CREAM!!!
But again, why? Don’t the companies who produce and sell cancer medications already spend enough on research? Unfortunately, the answer is NO. Pediatric cancer receives a very small percentage of the National Cancer Institute’s $4.8 billion annual budget and almost no research and development dollars from pharmaceutical companies. In fact, less than 4% of the NCI’s budget goes to pediatric cancers, and there has not been a new drug developed specifically for pediatric cancer in 20 years.
With that in mind, we are partnering up with Cookies for Kids’ Cancer (www.cookiesforkidscancer.org), a not-for-profit organization committed to raising funds to support research for new and improved therapies for pediatric cancers.
Cookies for Kids’ Cancer provides annual research grants to five of the nation’s leading pediatric cancer centers to advance the development of safe, more effective pediatric cancer treatments. As of 2013, a portion of funds raised is used to match the federal allowance per child enrolled in the Children’s Oncology Group’s Phase I & Pilot Consortium, consisting of 21 research hospitals nationwide, including Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland. In doing so, more children have access to treatments they otherwise would not have been able to receive.
We hope you enjoy not only eating our ice cream, but also knowing that your support will help many, many children across the country.
