This evening an unattended menorah (no one was home) caught on fire (the base) in a home in our community. However, B”H due to an amazing circumstance in which a passerby in a car noticed the flaming menorah through the window, stopped his car, and ran in to the home to put out the flame before it spread to the rest of the home, a more serious danger was averted. There were a number of key lessons to be learned here:
1) Don’t leave a menorah unattended. 2) Be particularly careful about menorahs made of wood and glue and paint (a popular young kid project) because these are highly flammable and the nuts used to hold the candles clog easily and do not work so well to form a stable base. 3) Hashem is always watching over us – something else to say thank you for.
