I wish someone would create a private website with the names, addresses, phone numbers of those that wish to have their names displayed. For security purposes, you would need a username and password to access the website. Who uses paper anymore? Besides, the Mikveh Directory isn’t free and many people choose to continue to use outdated copies rather than purchase a new one. I would be willing to contribute such a website. My guess is that the development and upkeep of a simple website would be far less expensive than a printed version. I’m not saying to have a website in place of the directory, but at least people would have a choice. My high school graduation class has its own website and can only be accessed by those given permission. Finally, if an electronic version existed, people might be able to use Calling Post and address simcha invitations more easily. Who knows, the day may come that invitations are sent via email.
The reason we cant find numbers in the directory is because there are at least 100 names that aren’t in there! In other communities these books are printed yearly… Hope the new one comes out soon!
There is nothing on the Internet that isn’t accessible to anyone who is knowledgeable to find it even with a username and password. I wouldn’t want to list so much private information on a website. I much prefer the private Mikveh book.
I think it is much easier to have a phone book in your kitchen, then to run to your computer every time you need to call someone. Most people wont mind paying the small fee to have the actual book. If you want an electronic version, why don’t you just download elist or smartlist for your smartphone. You cant export the numbers, but at least you can view them electronically.
Oh please. First of all, anyone can buy a Mikveh Directory. Secondly, if you believe there is any such thing as privacy any more, you’re fooling yourself. An online directory would be private anyhow. If you don’t want your name and address included, that’s fine. I wish someone with some website development experience would respond rather than a bunch of ill-informed guesses. As far as the next one being printed soon.. An online directory could be constantly updated.
Here is a link for the “smart list” website. http://smartlistlocal.com/. They currently have directories for 10 cities.
Why don’t you ask them if there is a way on the app, for people to update their information. (I’m sure it will go through a screening process) but then that information will be constantly updated and available before the next book gets printed.
Yes the mikveh dirctory could be put online and locked down. Could easily made so people can opt-out btw there has existed apps that had the mikveh directory on it available for IOS and Android.
CS. I am not advocating that an online database replace the Mikveh Directory. Yes. The money from the Mikveh Directory goes to the Cleveland Heights mikveh, but it is only updated perhaps once every two to three years and B”H our communities are growing at a rapid pace. Besides which, not everyone wants to pay $25 for it. How many of us are still relying on our outdated copy? My phone number and email address both changed since the last issue which left me stuck. I’m going to look into the suggestion from “response.”
Now that’s strange. I visited Smart List. It says it is already available in Cleveland. I did a search under my name and voila – my name and address came up but with my old phone number. There was no login required. Where is Smart List getting it’s information from?
I would love an online version. When you have a hand held device such as an iPhone or an ipod touch or any smartphone, you access almost all info online because it is always in yiur hand. You do not go to the computer. I hope the tech savvy folks in our community can help pull this together!
Not sure what the deal here is.the mikvah is currently running a fundraiser thru the publication of the phone book. If you have other ideas regarding how you would like to get your contact info then go for it. But why does it have to be a conversation here were it takes away from what the mikvah is doing?

If you have data online it easily mined and used in a bulk way for marketing and other purposes. In this case the old fashioned way is the best.

I rarely use the mikveh book anymore. I can get people’s phone numbers quicker via a computer search.

But I feel bad because I know the mikveh desperately needs funds. I wish I had a good idea for an alternative fundraiser. Anyone?
