(Letter from a Reader)
Morton A. Klein, national president of the Zionist Organization of America, will speak on “The Iran Nuclear Deal: Progress or Peril?” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at Temple Emanu E-l, 4545 Brainard Road in Orange.
Klein served in the administrations of Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. He has testified before the U.S. Congress and the Israeli Knesset. The Jewish Daily Forward named him one of the top five Jewish leaders in the U.S., and the Philadelphia Jewish Exponent selected him as one of the top 12 “Jewish activists of the century.”
“ZOA represents the deepest of Zionist commitment, and it is most fitting that its CEO will address our community in our historically Zionist congregation,” Rabbi Steven Denker, Temple Emanu El’s spiritual leader, said in a press release. “Mr. Klein’s appearance here reminds us all of the continuing and vital importance of maintaining a proud Zionist engagement in today’s world.”
Temple Emanu E-l’s Israel engagement group is sponsoring the talk.
The event is free and open to the community. A dessert reception will follow, with dietary laws observed.
RSVPs are requested to Judi Roseman at jroseman@teecleve.org or 21

Regarding going to the event. I think that whether or not services are taking place is irrelevant. I think for a lay person to simply make a statement giving the impression that it is alright to attend this event is inappropriate and misleading. Such a matter must be addressed by ones Rabbi. If it is indeed a worthy cause the Rabbi would factor that decision in.
Tel Chai says
Who is Mikhail Alterman? Is he a Rabbi or which community organizations is he the leader of? I respect Morton Klein and his many years of service as the head of the ZOA. But, with all due respect, I and most of my neighbors and friends already understand that Iran is dangerous. I think that the venue is in a Reform synagogue because Mr. Klein recognizes that the Orthodox community does NOT need to be convinced of the Iranian threat.
Jabotinsky says
I will be there and I am looking forward to it very much!
Mikhail Alterman says
To Tel Chai – Mikhail Alterman (me) is one of the instigators/organizers. Helped sponsor, logistics, etc.
Tonight’s event is not just about convincing. It’s a very useful event for those already onboard with pro-Israel and anti-Iran.
I just got this inside information: Mort Klein has a powerful news making speech but at the same time it’s only 40-45 min. There are actions and information not yet known to even people like me who pay a lot of attention. And then there is A LOT time for questions and answers. With so many people coming from so many different backgrounds (Obama voters, tea party) this is going to get very interesting and useful.
