Alanna Cooper will speak about her new book, “Bukharan Jews and the Dynamics of Global Judaism” at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, at Oheb Zedek-Cedar Sinai Synagogue, 23749 Cedar Road in Lyndhurst.
Cooper recently returned from a trip to the Soviet Central Asian republics of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan and will share stories gleaned from her research. About 50,000 Jews lived in that area in 1989, and the community emigrated en masse in the years following the dissolution of the former Soviet Union.
Cooper directs the Jewish studies division of the Laura and Alvin Siegal Lifelong Learning Program at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Her book was published by Indiana University Press.
The event is free and open to the public. A book signing and dessert reception will follow.
