I know that sometimes Whole Foods gets a bad rap in the frugal world. My own father – who actually shops at Whole Foods regularly – jokingly refers to it as “Whole Paycheck”.
And yes, a lot of the products sold at Whole Foods are more expensive than the same (or comparable) products available at Target or your local grocery store.
But in my experience, you can actually get some amazing bargains at Whole Foods — savings of as much as 70% or more off the shelf price on kosher, organic food.

I believe that Whole Foods is boycotting Israeli products.
healthy shopper says
That’s not correct. I’m a regular shopper there and they have Israeli products, including some produce during the winter.

There appears to be absolutely and unequivocally no truth to your rumor, Malka.
Have anything substantive to support your apparent belief? There was talk about it over 2 years ago, and it was dispelled.
I’m not saying they’re tzadikkim, but the fact is they’re not boycotting Israeli products.

I am a regular shopper at whole foods and if you haven’t been there let me fill you in on a few great finds… they have many canned goods with an OU such as hearts of palm, olives, high quality tomatoe sauces, sushi supplies, etc. They have a fantastic selection of baked goods (prepackaged), NY bagels, peanut free cupcakes, ruggelach, biscotti, and pizza crusts… fresh and reasonably priced! They sell frozen pie crusts and i am a fan of the whole wheat pie crust! Worth a trip to see what you can find… don’t forget the flowers!!!

CM, can you please tell us the brands of the prepackaged baked goods and the pie crust, so that i can look for them next time i’m there? Are they OU-pareve or OU-D?
Thanks!
healthy shopper says
The pie crust is pareve and it’s in the freezer section near the ice cream (end of the freezer, right before you get to the fresh seafood part of the store). Warning, though, we eat almost all whole grain and we do NOT like the whole wheat pie crust. The white one is pretty good though.

The pie crust is Whole Foods brand (365). It does not have any transfats. They also have excellent wheat bread at reasonable cost. I find that I buy a few select items there that I cannot find elsewhere. They also have a (rather expensive) pareve alternative to Rich’s Whip based on cashews, but forgot the brand name, and it is free of chemicals.
