(Kof-K, Rabbi Naftoli Burnstein)
This coming week, our local B.J’s (in Warrensville Heights) will have their bakery kashered, and will be going under the supervision of the Kof-K(or Chof-K). All of the baked products will be considered dairy. If you are in the area on Wendesday June 24th, in the morning, you can stop by and see them kashering the bakery. The Kof-k recommends waiting to purchase the baked goods from the bakery until after the official sign goes up(which might take a few days). This will allow for the products made before the kashering, to have been sold, and no longer on the shelves for purchase.
Dan says
Can we assume that the breads will be pareve (dairy equipment), since it’s assur to make them dairy?
For other items, if the label does not list dairy, can we also assume it’s DE only?
If anyone knows the answer, please share! Thanks!
Challah says
I also was confused by the information here. I can only guess that the bread would have to be pareve but since these days most larger scale bakeries use dairy ingredients that the mezonot stuff will be dairy or DE.
Neil from Beachwood says
I was just there today, so I can tell you exactly how it will work. There are two distinctly different product lines being sold.
One type is produced by the in-house bakery. All those will be kosher and dairy (after a couple of days from now)/
The others are pre-packaged imports from sources such as Laromme, Michel’s, Wellesley Farms, etc. These will have a hechsher on the label, just like packaged products you can buy anywhere else. That inclludes the Laromme whole challas, and challa eggrolls.
Dan says
Thanks, Neil.
Even for the in-house items, the breads should also just be Dairy Equipment, not really dairy, correct?
Baker says
Bread that is DE cannot be eaten with meat. This has the potential of being very confusing…Also , are the locally baked items considered pas Yisroel? Could Rabbi Burnstein please clarify for us….

I am looking for a frum adolescent female psychologist or social worker who takes Medical Mutual. Any ideas?
Challah Eater says
What I am hearing is that for now the oven is dairy so all breads being baked in it are coming out dairy equipment and are receiving a hechsher with a dairy letter. Next week the rabbis will clarify and possibly be able to establish some process in which the oven is used for pareve runs. The bakery does sell a lot of bakery products that are kosher pareve that are made outside of BJs.

Amy: try calling Rabbi Chaim Helman at Naaleh in Cleveland; he connects community members to mental health professionals. Very confidential and excellent. 215 591 6191

Is BJ’s bakery still under Kof K supervision and certification?
Are BJ’s apple turnovers and blueberry muffins still under Kof K supervision and certification?
Rochel says
The bakery items made in BJ’s in Warrensville Hts. do still have the Kof K label on them.
