Seize this berry moment.
Summer red raspberries are ripe. Currants of all colors (red, black, white and pink) are marching in. And blueberries are starting their journey from local farms to our fingers to our mouths. Brave are those who let us wander their orchards to pick, knowing we tend to eat at the same time.
I stopped at Secor’s Nursery in Perry last week for the red raspberries, reminding myself how important it was to bring along a curious 8–year-old who loves the little fruit and makes her own adventure out of finding just the right ones. Talk about double value.
Kashrus alert says
Just to make readers aware- many of these orchards do not use pesticides and are highly infested (beyond being able to clean and check). Make sure to contact your local rabbi or kashrus organization before planning a trip. (We were advised to throw out our whole container of blueberries last year much to our kids disappointment).
Esther Leah Greenberger says
I am not an expert on kashrus, but as my son-in-law works for Bodek, he warns us that even blueberries that are round and smooth without more than one hole at the top, must be soaked and checked for infestation before eating. Raspberries and blackberries are more difficult to clean. Speak to your LOR.

I’ve been wanting a Vitamix for a while because they are supposed to make the problem go away… Of course, check with your LOR
