(Cleveland Jewish News)(Many important facts about our historical cemeteries and a new approach to their management)
Overgrown trees and grass. Broken or missing fences. Overturned or damaged headstones.
That’s what people have been seeing when they visit many of the older Jewish cemeteries in Greater Cleveland, which have fallen into disrepair. Overall, there are about 69,000 graves in 16 Jewish cemeteries and three general cemeteries with Jewish sections in the Cleveland area.
Historically, synagogues, burial societies and benevolent associations have been responsible for the upkeep of these cemeteries. But many of them are either no longer active or have depleted their funds for perpetual care.
The Jewish Federation of Cleveland has stepped in to help.
