(Press Release)
It is with great pleasure that Young Israel of Greater Cleveland announces the addition of Rabbi Dr. Moshe Berger to our Synagogue family in the role of Scholar-in-Residence. A genuine scholar, Rabbi Berger’s focus will be on expanding the range of educational and study opportunities for our congregants and the broader community. In addition to formal classes Rabbi Berger will also be available for private or group study.
Rabbi Berger also staffs the weekly Shabbat morning Hashkoma Minyan (8:00am Service) at Young Israel. According to YIGC Rabbi Naphtali Burnstein, “Rabbi Berger has already been involved in Young Israel on a more limited basis over the past several years and we are excited to expand his role in this way. He brings a unique perspective on Torah and Orthodox Judaism and his tremendous erudition and experience makes him an incredibly valuable addition to our Shul”.
Rabbi Berger has long served as Professor of Bible and Rabbinic Studies at the Siegal College of Judaic Studies, where he continues to teach part-time. During his tenure at Siegal, he taught in areas ranging from text-based Bible and Midrash courses to theme- based courses in Jewish Philosophy and Thought. He has also served as a Scholar-in- Residence at Cedar Sinai Synagogue in Lyndhurst and as guest lecturer across the United States. Beyond his experience as an educator, Rabbi Berger was the congregational Rabbi for Sinai Synagogue in University Heights and also served as Orthodox Rabbi for campus Hillel organizations at Case Western Reserve University, Harvard-Radcliff and Brandeis.
Rabbi Berger received his rabbinical ordination from Boston Hassidic masters Rabbis Pinchas and Meir Horowitz. He holds MA and PhD degrees from Harvard University, where he studied under the renowned Professor Isadore Twersky and focused on the History of Jewish Thought with a concentration on Biblical commentary. A disciple of the late Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, Rabbi Berger has also studied directly under such legendary Torah personalities as Rabbi Dr. Aharon Lichtenstein, Rabbi Dr. Haim Soloveitchik and Professor Nechama Liebowitz.
