On Sunday March 6, 2016, Cleveland’s Jewish Orthodox Cub Scout Pack 613 held its first annual Blue & Gold Celebration, honoring the advancement in rank of eleven of the Pack’s Scouts. Recognition was also given to one of the Scouts who earned his Maccabee Emblem. The celebration – which took place at Young Israel of Greater Cleveland – featured divrei chizuk from Rabbi Naphtali Burnstein, as well as an inspirational and moving Keynote address from the Honorable State Treasurer, Josh Mandel.
“We’re so proud of all the scouts who participated and were honored by advancing in rank,” said Mark Baxter, District Executive of the Boy Scouts of America’s Greater Cleveland Council. “Everyone had a lot of fun and got to see the benefit of working hard toward a long term goal – one of the key principles of Scouting.”
After the accolades and awards were presented, the dignitaries along with the Scouts and their families enjoyed delicious refreshments, including a custom-made Blue & Gold cake prepared especially for the Scouts by The Bagel Shoppe.
The Cub Scouts is a branch of the Boy Scouts of America, serving boys in grades one through five. Cub Scouts participate in activities such as survival skills (navigation, fire safety, first aid), physical fitness, civic duty, woodworking, cook-outs, community service projects, and more. Pack 613 is Cleveland’s only Jewish Orthodox Cub Scout pack, and is organized specifically around the requirements and considerations of Torah observant Jews.
