A Conversation About Getting Life Insurance – Now
Interested Consumer: Can you briefly explain to me why you feel it’s so important that I have life insurance?
Sure, I’ll be happy to. We all have car insurance. We all have insurance on our homes. We all have health insurance. And we understand why it’s needed. And many people have life insurance as well. Why? Because there’s a realization that protecting one’s income is in fact more important than protecting one’s house. The fact is no one knows what will be tomorrow, no matter one’s age.
I challenge you to honestly answer this simple question: If you didn’t make it home tomorrow, will your family be able to continue managing fine financially? If you didn’t answer Yes, then it’s incumbent on you to insure and protect your ability to provide for your loved ones, and get life insurance – or more life insurance.
Now, the reality is people in general are emotionally uncomfortable to objectively think and consider things such as sickness, accidents or death. It’s morbid and not a pleasant topic to contemplate. However, unfortunately some people let these emotions actually get in the way of taking the logical and responsible steps towards putting in place good protection. The fact is that people get sick and people get into accident’s, both young and old, both male and female. Some survive and some don’t survive.
I get the chills thinking about a father who was diagnosed with a dreaded disease in an advanced stage, while going through months of treatment, and his added intense pain knowing he never got life insurance – and now being uninsurable. This person would pay almost anything today to get some life insurance. Unfortunately, he put off getting insurance – and the rest is history!
Your ability to make an income and thereby help support your family is your greatest financial asset!
If we readily insure our home – a smaller value potentially at risk, certainly we should and must insure ourselves – a far greater value at risk! Life insurance is not a luxury. If you have a spouse and/or children it is an absolute necessity to have life insurance!
Can we be considered a responsible husband or father, or wife or mother if we don’t own any life insurance?
Absolutely not!
Interested Consumer: OK. You make a lot of sense. Fine, I’m in it and I agree I’ve been negligent for not having life insurance up until now, but I’ll be honest with my only hesitation. I’m just not sure I can afford to get life insurance. Please explain a bit about what it would cost me.
Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good!
I’ll be happy to put the cost aspect in perspective on a broad level. You personally may ideally need perhaps 1 or 2 million dollars’ coverage or more to truly protect your family economically based on your particular family dynamics, income and/or current lifestyle and any outstanding debt – and when we sit down we will figure this all out, and by the way you’ll be surprised how low rates have come down. However, realize that if the premium costs for your target amount is beyond your financial comfort level, don’t give up or push off getting at least some amount of coverage. Getting some amount – whether it’s $500K, $250K or 100K or even less will make a huge difference for a grieving family, helping them get through a number of years with relative financial peace of mind. To address your question more directly and illustrate just how affordable life insurance can be, you may realistically get a good amount of protection for as little as 50 cents a day or less, depending on age, gender and health, as well as obviously how much coverage and assuming it’s term, the length of term.
So please don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
I urge you to commit now that you will join the responsible one’s and get an affordable amount of life insurance. Decide to pick up the phone and make the call towards financially protecting your loved ones and their future!
I quote here from a grieving and regretful husband: “We’ve always intended to get life insurance for Sara… We thought we had time.”
There are unfortunately too many stories of families whose loved one’s didn’t have life insurance and subsequently had a huge financial burden added on top of their emotional pain. This doesn’t need to happen and should not happen, and there’s NO reason for anyone that can be medically approved to not get at least some amount of insurance!
Interested Consumer: Wow! I just never thought of it this way. I think I haven’t gotten any life insurance as I simply got used to not having and it continued this way. Now I have a family and I really must have life insurance. I appreciate you taking the time to explain it all so well. I am committed now and I promise I’ll be reaching out to you to help me with getting the right amount of coverage based on my family, current lifestyle, debt etc. and my budget. Thank you!
