Yes, there are fresh things to buy, but the growth we’re talking about has as much to do with the number of farmers markets, the number of farmers, and the strength of connections that markets make to our communities.
Shop a farmers market, and it’s hard not to feel more intimate with the land. Farmers, the few small-scale, personalized ones that still exist, make lots of plans during the winter. They get down on their knees to plant in spring. And they sell to us from folding tables, hoping to make enough money so they don’t have to fold. The profit margin on food is thin.
