GARFIELD HEIGHTS – Crews began preliminary operations on the widening project between the Cuyahoga/Summit county line and Miles Road in the cities of Bedford, Bedford Heights, Warrensville Heights and Oakwood on Aug. 1.
The entire project includes full-depth pavement replacement, widening and bridge work on Interstate 271 north and southbound between the Cuyahoga/Summit county line and Miles Road.
During the week of Aug. 1, crews will perform shoulder closures at various locations on I-271 north and southbound between the Cuyahoga/Summit county line and Miles Road and during the week of Aug. 8, crews will begin overnight lane closures.
This section of I-271 originally was built in the early 1960s and traffic volumes have increased on this route to more than 120,000 vehicles per day at Broadway-Forbes Road. The current design of the roadway needs to be improved to handle the current and project traffic counts in the years to come, the Ohio Department of Transportation said.
I-271 will be widened to three lanes north and southbound between Miles and Columbus roads and five lanes north and southbound between Columbus Road and Interstate 480/I-271 split near the Summit County line. Work also includes lighting, signing, noise walls, concrete barrier, replacement of the existing pavement, widening of six existing bridges, and the construction of two new structures.
