The consumer should be aware that Israeli peppers are once again being sold in our local supermarkets this time of year and have been spotted at Costco. A proper separation of terumos & ma’asros is required before using. There is usually a sticker on the pepper indicating the country of origin.
A comprehensive overview of teruma and maaser in the Diaspora, including how to separate terumos and maasros can be viewed at the Star K’s website: https://www.star-k.org/articles/kosher-lists/1160/terumos-and-maasros/.
Cahan Yehuda says
A text I got from a Clevelander who lives in E. Israel:
“I saw in the local Jewish news bulletin from today that there are Israeli peppers in Costco, and the advisement said to take terumah/maaser.
>>> I believe this is a mistake and such peppers should not be purchased.
At this point there are probably still sefichim. (The rule here (in E.Israel) is that vegetables are okay only from Hanukkah on, America should be at least a few months behind.) Perhaps someone should issue a correction…?
