It looks like the remnants of Hurricane Harvey will reach us on Sunday. It’s expected to be centered over Northern Kentucky by Sunday morning. The worst of the two possible scenarios is for showers and Thunderstorms for our region. Possibly up to half-an-inch of rain for Shabbos. Whereas Harvey is not expected to bring widespread flooding, or flooding anywhere close to the disaster in Texas, enough rain may fall to bring urban and isolated flash flooding to some states farther north. We might get up to four inches of rain when it’s all said and done. Chicago and Detroit should be spared, but anywhere east of us, including the North-East will be impacted to some extent. So, plan ahead if you are planning travel over the holiday weekend.

Yesh Tikvah is expanding its reach with two new programs designed to help more people pay for mental health services.
The first, made possible by a grant from the Community Fund Management Foundation (CFMF), offers free subsidies to help 17 adults and teenagers of the Jewish community meet the cost of outpatient psychiatric care. According to Yesh Tikvah Board Member Mrs. Chavi (Jessica) Cohen, “We’ve had many requests to cover psychiatric care, but until now we were limited to funding therapeutic interventions. Now, with a generous grant from the Community Fund Management Foundation, we are launching a pilot program to help individuals in the community see a psychiatrist or purchase psychotropic medication.”
CFMF Executive Director Amanda Buzo commented, “That the organization is pleased to award Yesh Tikvah a grant to expand its services to include psychiatric care for clients. CFMF’s purpose, both through its Endowment Program and special needs trust administration services, is to improve the quality of life of Ohio residents with disabilities and we are proud to support nonprofits with similar missions like Yesh Tikvah.”
In a separate move, Yesh Tikvah’s board of directors recently voted to expand the organization’s service area, making limited funds available to Jews residing anywhere in Cuyahoga County. Until now distribution was limited to specific communities.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health only about half of the adults in the U.S. with a serious mental illness receive treatment. Cost is one significant barrier to care. Rabbi Joseph noted that when Yesh Tikvah started, “We served only adults, just this year; we were able to expand service to children and teens. The need is great and we’re growing to meet the demand.”
While Yesh Tikvah’s professional intake committee considers each case on an individual basis, applicants must demonstrate financial need. Yesh Tikvah is strictly a source of supplementary funding for situations where insurance does not fully cover the cost of care. The organization does not make referrals.

CLEVELAND – There is no greater mitzvah (good deed) than caring for those who came before us. Volunteers are needed for the Annual Fall Cemetery Cleanup hosted by the Jewish Federation of Cleveland’s Jewish Volunteer Network and the Commission on Cemetery Preservation (COCP). The event will take place on Sunday, September 10 from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. at Chesed Shel Emeth (3740 Ridge Road, Cleveland), also known as Ridge Rd. 1. All ages are welcome to participate in this community-wide event, rain or shine.
Volunteers are asked to bring weed trimmers, shovels, clippers, hedgers, gloves, wheelbarrows, and other gardening tools to help prune, rake, and beautify the cemetery grounds in time for the Jewish holy days. Shaimos (holy writings, words of Torah, and Holy Objects) will be collected at the Cemetery Cleanup and subsequently buried at the cemetery as a sign of reverence and respect according to Jewish law.
Past Cemetery Cleanup events have attracted hundreds of people across generations and denominations. Preserving cemeteries is considered one of the most righteous acts of chesed (kindness).
The Federation has launched a Cemetery Preservation Campaign with the goal of raising $3.5 million to honor the deceased and ensure ongoing care of the cemeteries under the COCP’s jurisdiction. COCP has been broadening their role in cemetery preservation, and is responsible for the upkeep of over 15,000 graves with the jurisdiction of seven Jewish cemeteries. To make a donation to the Cemetery Preservation Campaign, visit www.jewishcleveland.org/cemetery.
Event Chairs are Dan Brown, Jeff Morris, and Judy and Marv Solganik.

Yesh Tikvah announced today it has been named a “2017 Top-Rated Nonprofit” by GreatNonprofits, the leading provider of user reviews of charities and nonprofits.
Yesh Tikvah provides financial assistance to the Jewish community in Cleveland, saving marriages, families and lives.
“We are honored to be named a 2017 Top-Rated Nonprofit,” says Dr. Meir Pollack, Chairman of the YT Board of Directors. We are proud of our accomplishments this year, including expanding

One of our clients posted this review, “If I had not heard about the great work being done by Yesh Tikvah I shudder to think how much further my downward spiral would have continued. This is an amazing and (unfortunately) necessary organization, and I am confident that the lives of those whom YT has helped would presently be impossibly bleak if it were not for their aid”. (Click to view full review of Yesh Tikvah. Write your own review here.)
“Yesh Tikvah is a great example of a nonprofit making a real difference in their community,” said Perla Ni, CEO of GreatNonprofits, “Their award is well-deserved recognition not only of their work, but the tremendous support they receive, as shown by the many outstanding reviews they have received from people who have direct experience working with Yesh Tikvah”.
GreatNonprofits is the leading website where people share stories about their personal experiences on more than 1.2 million charities and nonprofits. From the Cleveland Jewish News article “Orthodox Jewish schools see ‘dramatic growth’” by Amanda Koehn
As educators and students prepare for a new school year, local Jewish day schools are seeing changes in terms of renovations, new campuses and new programs. The schools predict continued growth in enrollment, primarily focused in the Orthodox community.
With an influx of Orthodox families moving to the Cleveland area for reasonably-priced homes, quality day schools and one of the strongest state voucher programs in the country to help families pay for education, the schools’ leaders are working to accommodate rising student populations this year and in the future.

Graco’s announcement of recall includes the following:
While waiting for a replacement kit, consumers may continue to use the My Ride 65 convertible car seats.
NHTSA’s announcement of recall
Article from Syracuse.com:
Graco is recalling over 25,000 car seats due to harness webbing that could fail to restrain children in crashes.
The recall includes certain models of the company’s My Ride 65 convertible car seats, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The models include:
The problem with the seats’ webbing was uncovered during mandated testing, according to Graco. The webbing did not meet federal requirements for breaking strength and could tear, according to NHTSA.
The affected car seats were made from May 16, 2014 to Aug. 1, 2014, Graco said.
The company plans to notify consumers affected by the recall and provide replacement kits with new harnesses and installation instructions. Owners can continue to use their car seats while waiting for replacement harnesses, according to Graco.
There have been no injuries associated with the recall, the company said.
Graco is expected to begin sending out replacement kits in July, according to NHTSA.
Yesh Tikvah received Cultural Competence in Mental Health award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness Greater Cleveland. The award is given to a mental health organization that demonstrates understanding of their clients’ cultural needs in addressing mental health.
