New LJN Feature for Upcoming Elections – Connect to your Candidates
In an effort to take the local elections from a list of recommended names on a website or piece of paper in shul to something “real” with issues that do really affect us and real people behind them, we have come up with a new feature just in time for the November 5th election. We have asked selected candidates from various races in the localities of our Orthodox Jewish communities to share a little about themselves and to highlight their own opinions and positions that may be important to our community. This is a purely unbiased non-editorial feature. Recommendations from JVOTE and other LJN readers will continue to be available. Look for our first feature introducing Melissa Yasinow.
Melissa Yasinow, Candidate for CH Council – LJN “Connect to your Candidates” Feature
(OOPS!I mistakenly put the wrong name. MELISSA!! If you have any questions for this candidate, leave a comment.)
As a candidate for Council, I am proud to continue my family’s long tradition of Jewish leadership in Cleveland Heights and in Greater Cleveland. Ever since my great-great grandfathers Menachem Mendel Madorsky and Jacob Makoff founded Zemach Zedek and Heights Jewish Center, civic engagement has been part of my and my family’s very being. For example, my grandfather, James Yasinow, is a former candidate for the CH-UH Board of Education, and he, my aunt (Debbie Yasinow), and my father (Dr. Eric Yasinow) are all in the Heights High Alumni Hall of Fame.

The Text of Birchas Hagomeil
After Eliezer’s extensive travels through the desert, he presumably recited birchas hagomeil. Did he use the same text that we use?
By Rabbi Yirmiyohu Kaganoff (RabbiKaganoff.com)
Question #1: Slip up in shul
Not long ago, I received the following question in an e-mail. Upon reciting birchas hagomeil, the individual erred and recited the following:
“Hagomeil tovim, shegemalani kol tuv,” thereby omitting the word lachayavim in “Hagomeil lachayavim tovim.” Must he now repeat the bracha because he omitted a word?

How You Can Help People Living With Gaucher Disease
(Ed:Maybe the average frum person is not going to wear green shoe laces, but the education still seems a good idea.)
Gaucher disease is a rare inherited disorder caused by a deficiency in a particular enzyme. It is estimated that approximately 1 in 40,000 to 60,000 people in the general population have Gaucher – and it is the most common genetic disease among Ashkenazi Jews. People with the disease often experience severe bone pain and fatigue along with other symptoms.
During October, you can show your support for people affected by Gaucher disease and make a great fashion statement at the same time by taking part in the Steps Ahead of Gaucher effort. It’s free and fun! The Steps Ahead of Gaucher program will be distributing free green shoelaces to thousands of people in the coming weeks.
