With sadness we inform you of the passing of  Mrs. Sherry Jaffe , Shifra bas Hersh Leib, of blessed memory , mother of Mrs. Jill Weiszner. The funeral will be Tuesday, October 8, at 3:30 PM at Bet Olam, at the corner of Chagrin Road and Richmond Road. Shiva information to follow.

Why is the first beracha of Shemoneh Esrei, which is called Birkas Avos, different from all the other berachos of Shemoneh Esrei?

 

Question #2: Wanderings of the mind

Mutti Kulis* calls me with the following predicament:

Despite my best intentions, my mind sometimes wanders during davening, although I really wish I could focus always on building my relationship with Hashem. I recently discovered that the Mishnah Berurah rules that someone saying Shemoneh Esrei who realizes that he recited the first beracha without kavanah should refrain from proceeding until the chazzan’s repetition, and be very attentive to the chazzan’s davening. I tried this once, but did not find this solution practical.

Cleveland Heights residents question need for Cleveland Heights-University Heights Schools bond issue

A group of residents angry at the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District’s request for $135 million want residents to vote no on the Nov. 5 ballot (Issue 81).

A group called the Heights Ballot Issue Campaign Committee agrees that repairs are needed but that the cost and focus of the proposed plan is flawed.

1:23PM IL: Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital officials’ announced the bitter news moments ago. HaGaon HaRav Chaim Ovadia Yosef  ZTVK”L was niftar a short time ago, Monday, 3 Marcheshvan 5774, after his bodily organs collapsed despite doctors’ best efforts. The gadol hador was 93-years-old.

On Sunday night the doctors decided to place him back into a medically induced coma and on a respirator in the hope of stabilizing his condition and permitting his frail body to heal. A systemic blood infection was diagnosed earlier in the day. During the night the gadol hador’s condition took a dramatic turn for the worse and earlier this morning, the rav’s family was summoned to his bedside.

A+ Learning and Development Centers – Peterson Scholarship Assistance

Chalav Yisroel Kosher Milk NOT Affected by New WIC Guidelines

agudathmidwestIn response to several questions from community members:

Ohio’s Women Infants and Children (WIC) program recently issued new guidelines stating that WIC recipients can only purchase store- brand milk. WIC recipients who require Chalav Yisroel Kosher milk (which is not store-brand) will still be able to purchase this milk as they have in the past.

Ohio WIC will be reminding designated stores of the kosher exception to the “store-brand policy”.

Agudath Israel has worked closely with the Ohio WIC office for many years and they have repeatedly showed sensitivity to our communities’ religious dietary needs. We thank them for their prompt attention to this matter.
