What Could be Wrong with the Steak?
Since the laws of kashrus and specifically of shechitah feature so significantly in this week’s parsha, I present:
What Could be Wrong with the Steak?
By Rabbi Yirmiyohu Kaganoff at rabbikaganoff.com
Question #1: Why don’t we use that hechsher?
When Yankel returns from kollel one day, his wife Miriam asks for his advice about the following situation. While visiting a neighbor, Miriam noticed her neighbor using a brand of meat that nobody she knows considers reliably kosher. “Should I tell her that her meat does not have a good hechsher?”

How about vouchers for my birthday?
Happy Birthday, Milton Friedman!
Today, Milton Friedman, the Jewish Nobel Prize-winning economist and school choice advocate, would have celebrated his 101st birthday. In what may be considered a birthday present, July 31st was also the deadline to apply for Ohio’s new voucher program for low-income students. Thanks to Friedman’s idea and the Ohio legislature’s support, dozens of Cleveland students will receive an EdChoice scholarship this month to attend a Jewish kindergarten of their choice.
Watch Our for Door-to-Door Energy Salesman
A reader wrote in that several different people are going door-to-door attempting to sell energy ‘discounts’ on your energy bill. One such company is called APG&E. There has been an increase in scams like this and others especially targeting elderly and home-bound people. This link describes a similiar situation but of a different company and location. Watch out! But, that being said, there are great deals out there from alternative energy suppliers and very reputable people in our own community who sell energy company products.

Knowledge is Power in HRRC’s Home How-To Classes
ce (Home Repair Resource Center)
by Rebecca Stager
It was messy, sawdust everywhere. It was noisy, with saws, drills, and routers all running at the same time. It was exciting, with eyes sparkling behind safety glasses. On June 5, at Home Repair Resource Center’s (HRRC) Teaching Center, 13 women met to make basic tool boxes during the first carpentry class in HRRC’s women’s repair course.

Natural gas prices falling and you can thank the weather
(Plain Dealer)(Ed: For those who have been looking at their gas bills, deciding to go the fixed or variable route, this is news!)
Natural gas wholesale prices tumbled Monday, setting the stage for lower prices for some consumers in August and possibly into the fall and early winter.
Predictions of cooler than normal temperatures in the eastern half of the nation during the next two weeks sent commodity traders scrambling to sell, driving down the final price for gas delivered in August by 10 cents to $3.45 for 1,000 cubic feet.

Halachos and Hashkafos of Bentching
Because last week’s Parsha provides the great Mitzvah of Birkas HaMazon, we provide a review of certain Halachos and Hashkafos relating to it:
A. The following points and pointers are culled from the Dirshu Mishna Berurah:
1. If one finished his meal and washed Mayim Achronim, or picked up a Kos in order to lead bentsching, he can no longer eat and drink, and should not even speak (even Divrei Torah) until he has bentsched. If the Ba’al HaBayis said “Let’s bentsch” and then someone wants to drink, he must make a new bracha on the drink. If one wants to eat, it is a Machlokes Rishonim as to whether he must make a new bracha or not. Accordingly, the Mishna Berurah rules that lechatchila one should be careful not to eat after the Ba’al HaBayis has said “Let’s bentsch”.
