We regret to inform you of the passing of long-time Cleveland resident, Mrs. Helen (Chanku) Gottesman Ungar. A Holocaust survivor, Mrs. Ungar spent her final years living with her children in Baltimore. Graveside services at Bet Olam Cemetary (Richmond & Chagrin) at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 28. Shiva at the Joe Klein residence, 4154 Stonehaven Rd. as well as in Baltimore starting on Tuesday night. Survivors include her three children, Alice Assayag of Cleveland, Rabbi Chaim Moshe of Baltimore, and Maddy Malek of Israel, and her brother, Joe Klein of Cleveland.
May the family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. Ha’Makom yenachem eschem b’soch she’ar avay’lay Tzion v’Yerushalayim.

Oakwood Commons will bring change, but how remains unclear

It’s been more than two years since Lyndhurst-based First Interstate Properties announced its intent to turn the Oakwood Country Club, a former private Jewish country club that straddled South Euclid and Cleveland Heights, into Oakwood Commons, a mix of retail, residential and green space.
While progress has been made on the South Euclid side of things – including plans for a Walmart Supercenter on that city’s 62 acres – plans for 92 acres in Cleveland Heights remain largely on the drawing board.

Throughout the year, the Cleveland Heights police rally up stolen and abandoned bikes across the city. If they can’t find the owner, they’re required by law to hold an auction to sell the bikes to the public.

Keep Your School Safe – A Guide for North American Jewish Schools

In light of recent events, there can no longer be any doubt that all parents must encourage and maximize safety in their children’s school. The essential new guide, Keep Your School Safe (KYSS), is currently en route to all Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, and Community Day schools. The guide helps schools conduct a thorough security review to assist them to carefully evaluate and improve school safety. This guide is published in memory of the faculty and students of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, as well as the victims of the Boston Marathon terror attack.
