The Kindertransport to Britain 1938/39 : New Perspectives edited by Andrea Hammel and Bea Lewkowicz.

The Kindertransport to Britain 1938/39 contains essays which provide new perspectives on the Kindertransport, which in 1938-1939 brought almost 10,000 children from Nazi controlled countries to Britain.  Some of the topics discussed are children who were forced to migrate further to Scotland, Australia and New Zealand.  Former transportees write about their experiences leaving their parents and being placed in foster homes surrounded by a new culture, language and social environment.

How is the Chief Rabbi of England chosen?  Meir Persoff’s fascinating book draws on unaccessed and unpublished material to describe in detail how the 7 Chief Rabbis of England have been appointed (although only six have been installed).   The story of many of the Rabbis involves intrigue, in-fighting and self-interest. Recommended for history buffs and those interested in what goes on across the pond.

 Rabbi Yossy, former Lubavitch emissary to South Africa, presently Rabbi of Johannesburg’s largest Jewish congregation, has written short (one or two pages) thoughts on the weekly Torah readings.  Each vignette is written in easy to comprehend language and contains a valuable message to which all readers can connect.  Recommended for all those involved in kiruv, youth organizations or those looking for a down to earth vort on the weekly parsha.

New Series Highlighting the Aaron Garber Library

pile-of-books_jpgIlka Gordon, librarian at the Aaron Garber Library has kindly volunteered to write a series of articles on the holdings and special features of this library, especially aspects that may be useful to the Orthodox community.

Aaron Garber Library ( located in the former Siegal College building), is open to the Jewish community.  We are an academic library housing over 46,000 books, CDs and periodicals in Hebrew, Aramaic, Yiddish and English.  We have a large collection of seforim such as several editions of the Talmud Bavli, the Yerushalmi, Mishnayot and many other seforim which will be featured in our bi-weekly library list.  Every two weeks, we will highlight five books from our collection, usually new books. We welcome you to the library, one of the Jewish community’s great resources. We hope you enjoy this new addition to the Newsletter. Please stop by and explore Cleveland’s Jewish treasure for yourself.
