Year-end crime statistics from the Cleveland Heights Police Department indicate that, despite a few high-profile cases, serious crime was down 22.4 percent in the city in 2014. Serious crimes consist of violent crimes against people and major crimes against property. Less serious incidents, such as trespassing and OVI, are not included in these figures.

The city wants to make more zero-interest loans available, and allow more businesses to receive grants to help spruce up their spaces.
Through the city’s current storefront renovation program, owners can apply for a zero-interest loan to cover half the cost to improve their businesses, up to $25,000; and businesses in certain commercial areas may receive a rebate to cover up to 50 percent, as much as $25,000. There’s also a $2,000 rebate for signage on significant projects.

Severance Town Center appears to be headed for the auction block, after a speedy foreclosure case concluded last week.
Cuyahoga County Judge John P. O’Donnell signed off Dec. 31 on a foreclosure decree related to the notable retail property. Now a lender has asked that the shopping center, at Mayfield and Taylor roads in Cleveland Heights, be sold at a foreclosure auction in an attempt to recoup more than $38 million in debt.

Severance Town Center, a prominent retail property in Cleveland Heights, is the subject of a foreclosure lawsuit filed in Cuyahoga County.
On July 1, a lender asked to foreclose on the troubled shopping center, after the property’s out-of-state owner failed to repay the balance on a $43 million mortgage. Now, the litigation is working its way through Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, where it’s possible that a judge might appoint an outside expert — called a receiver — to manage the 600,000-square-foot complex.

“The Access Cleveland Heights App empowers residents to be our eyes and ears in the community by providing an easy and interactive way to report issues at their convenience,” said City Manager Tanisha Briley. “The new app also creates a tool for us to manage service requests and expand coordination and communication between departments which will result in more efficient and effective service to residents.”

Cleveland Heights City Council made the appointment. The zoning board handles requests for variances and hears appeals of decisions made by city officials.
