Petition for Kosher Dunkin Donuts

January 5, 2017 Leave a Comment

Some community members have created a petition to encourage Dunkin Donuts at Cedar Center to become kosher. No word on whether the expectation is for cholov yisroel or not but first steps first.

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/kosherdunkindonutsforcleveland/

From David Farkas:

Thank you for posting. The petition, which has been enthusiastically supported since it was put up on Friday, is the first phase of our efforts. Once we have a suitable amount of signatures, we will IYH meet with the franchise owners to discuss possibilities, potential obstacles, and solutions. We will do everything we can to make it a reality. But the first and most important step is demonstrating to the owners the market share they can capture by going Kosher.
Signing the petition takes about 15 seconds. Please click the link to sign the petition today (if you haven’t already done so) and get your friends and spouses to do so as well. Even those who live out of town, but would appreciate a Kosher D & D for when they visit, should sign.

The Only Out-Of-The-Box Kosher Shaver- Price Reduction – $24.95

March 27, 2016 7 Comments

A few years ago Amazon started selling a version of the Norelco electric shaver that does NOT feature the Lift & Cut technology which makes for an out-of-the-box kosher shaver without any modifications. Our post from then appears below with a number of important links to learn more about the the various halachic approaches, and different models available.

UPDATED FOR 2017 – 2 Recommended Models

Philips Norelco 6948XL/41 Rechargeable Cordless Razor –  kosher as-is, without Lift & Cut technology, rechargeable and has beard trimmer, a great deal (~$34)

Philips Norelco Electric Shaver 1100, S1150/81 – basically same as above but is corded. Costs less (~$24). From my experience, a corded unit, while a little inconvenient is better as inevitably the batteries on these units stop holding a charge after a few years of use and with a cord you always have 100% power.

But this week, just in time, Amazon has dropped the price on the Philips Norelco HQ6900/41 to just $24.95. This shaver clearly features the “Closecut” technology which despite its name does not have any extra features that make it a halachic issue. It is not a Lift & Cut shaver. This is a very bare bones shaver – corded and it has no rear beard trimmer. For $10 more you could buy the Philips Norelco 6948XL/41 which is cordless and has a beard trimmer. The price will not stay this low for long.

Kosher restaurant opens inside Hillel

January 21, 2016 Leave a Comment

Kantina(Cleveland Jewish News)

Uptown and its surrounding area has become a thriving arts and entertainment district in Cleveland’s University Circle. But even with the  transformation over the last several years, the neighborhood was still lacking in one area: kosher restaurants.

That all changed on Jan. 14 when Kantina, a new kosher restaurant, opened inside the Albert and Norma Geller Hillel Student Center on Euclid Avenue.

teslakosher(Cleveland.com)(Ed: Not a ton of new info but may be worth reading.)

A New York entrepreneur is one step closer to building a kosher grocery store on Mayfield Road in Lyndhurst.

Israel Blackman, who owns an electronics distribution company, bought a  1.6-acre vacant lot from Mark Sims last month for $700,000. A sign has been erected on the property announcing the “glatt kosher supermarket” is on its way.

shop-cart-icon(Cleveland Jewish News)(Ed: Previously reported in a July ’15 posting)

A kosher supermarket is firmly in the cards for Lyndhurst now that a Brooklyn, N.Y., business owner paid $700,000 for a 1.6-acre lot at the southwestern corner of Mayfield and Richmond roads.

Chuck Essreg of Kowit & Co. Real Estate Group, who handled the deal, said Nov. 2 that Israel Y. Blackman, who is president of Discover Group, plans to build a “glatt kosher supermarket” on the lot.

Ritz Crackers – “Circular” Reasoning About Their Pareve Status

February 10, 2015 6 Comments

ritz-crackers-original(Community Member)

There seems to be a wide-spread overly optimistic assumption that Ritz Crackers are pareve and that the OU-D designation simply refers to the fact that it was produced on a dairy production line. I have seen several people take this for granted and consume Ritz crackers within a meat meal.

I personally contacted the O-U and was told that these crackers contain real dairy ingredients! See the ingredient list below. (Ed: you may also wish to check out “No more fudging the facts” about the Oreo dairy controversy too. Also check out a great web article on deciphering ingredient labels to figure out which ingredients are dairy, but please do not use to permit foods for kosher concerns).

The Only Out-Of-The-Box Kosher Shaver- Price Reduction – $25

June 11, 2014 Leave a Comment

NorelcoLast year we did a post on a new shaver by Norelco that is the first model in a long while that does NOT have the Lift & Cut technology. Why does this matter? Based upon information from KosherShaver.org (brought below) and the psak of HaRav Dovid Feinstein and other poskim, this shaver is indeed a kosher shaver out-of-the-box.  Also please note that KosherShaver.org offers a free service to “kasher” other models of Norelco shavers that do have the Lift & Cut that need to be removed.

Right now Amazon has a great deal on this shaver again – just $25 (just be sure to clip the coupon located just below the price)

STAR-S Passover Kitniyot Selection Grows Again This Year

March 18, 2014 Leave a Comment

image001(This is a press release from the Star-K but contains much newsworthy interesting information for Sefardim and Ashkenazim interested in the process of certifying kitniyot for Pesach use in America)

(By Judah Levi) When the major American Kashrut agencies were developing, the Sephardic communities were not well-represented in American Jewish communal life. Over the last 30 years, Baruch Hashem, American Yeshivot have been filled with many of the best and brightest boys of our communities. In addition to Syrian and Morrocan boys studying at the Mirrer Yeshiva in Brooklyn, many Persian boys studied in Ner Yisrael in Baltimore, MD where the President, Rabbi Herman N. Neuberger, ZT”L, was instrumental in helping tens of thousands of Jews escape after the Shah’s fall in 1979.

No More Fudging the Facts with “Pareve” Kosher Oreos

December 12, 2013 10 Comments

oreosA reader has written in asking that we alert the community to a possible error in the practice of those who eat Oreo Cookies based on the assumption that while they carry an OU-D they do not have any actual dairy ingredients and are merely considered “dairy equipment.” This assumption was perhaps based on statements available online such as:

(From cRc newsletter alerts, Shavuos 5772 / 2012) “At the present time, most varieties of Oreo Cookies contain dairy ingredients, with two notable exceptions. Original Oreo Sandwich Cookie and Oreo Double Stuf Sandwich Cookie do not contain dairy ingredients, though they are manufactured on dairy equipment. The equipment is not necessarily cleaned before the [Read more…]
