Distracted Driving
From an anonymous reader:
While walking in my neighborhood a few days ago, I observed a driver davening—not by heart, but actually reading from a siddur while the car was in motion. There is nothing commendable about this person’s devotion to Torah u’mitzvos, when s/he does not have love for the children of HaKadosh Baruch Hu.
We just read last week about the arei miklat—the cities of refuge to which an inadvertent killer could flee. Remember that this person was exiled, could not return home for the whole tenure of the Kohen Gadol, because, although the killing was not intentional, he is, nonetheless, guilty of criminal negligence. How would the driver feel if, chas vechalilah, he struck a person and caused serious injury, or worse?
Achai Bnei Yisrael, remember that driving is a privilege, not a right. You are operating heavy, dangerous machinery when you drive a vehicle, thus the warnings on pharmaceuticals that make one slow to respond.
Do your davening in shul or at home, and then drive to your destination. If you are running late, then go to work or your appointment, and daven during your break, in a room where you can stand on your feet.
With wishes for a meaningful fast, and may this year be the one in which the day is changed me’evel leYom Tov.

Be Nice, Clear Your Ice! And Sidewalks! It’s the Law!
Not only is it the courteous thing to do, it is also the law. If adults want to walk in the street – that’s their prerogative. However, our children are being forced to walk in the streets because too many people do not care enough to shovel and salt their sidewalks.
It is actually a State of Ohio law that we must shovel our sidewalks – http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/
723.011 Control of sidewalks, curbs, and gutters.
The legislative authority of a municipal corporation, in addition to the powers conferred by sections 729.01 to 729.10, inclusive, of the Revised Code, may require, by ordinance, by the imposition of suitable penalties or otherwise, that the owners and occupants of abutting lots and lands shall keep the sidewalks, curbs, and gutters in repair and free from snow or any nuisance.
Some cities augment the State of Ohio law with their own city ordinances:
Beachwood: http://whdrane.
660.05 MAINTENANCE OF SIDEWALKS ; SNOW AND ICE.It is hereby determined that it is the duty of every owner, occupant or person in control of any lot or land within the City along the front or side of which any sidewalk is located upon a public street or highway and designed for use by the public, to keep such sidewalk free from dirt, mud, snow, ice, rubbish, obstructions of any kind or other nuisance.
Snow Removal: For safety’s sake, residents and merchants should keep their walks free of snow, ice, and debris.
Shaker Heights: http://shakeronline.com/city-services/collection-and-removal/snow-collection
City ordinance (Ordinance 743.01) requires residents to clear sidewalks, including corner property curb ramps, of snow, ice, and slush by 9 am the day after a snowfall.
South Euclid: http://www.mcs360.com/
Every owner, occupant or person having charge of any tenement, building, lot or land fronting on any street or highway in the City shall clear the sidewalk abutting the tenement, building, lot or land of snow or ice before 11:00 a. m. of each day and cause the same to be kept clear thereof to the width of at least two feet.
University Heights: Updated link from a 2013 University Heights newsletter:
City ordinances require homeowners to keep their sidewalks clear of snow for pedestrians.
http://www.university-heights.org/Streets/Sidewalk-Snow.pdf
The sidewalk must be cleared the entire width of the sidewalk down to the concrete.
Clearing Ice and Snow. Each person having charge of any building, lot or land fronting on any street or alley shall clear the whole sidewalk in front of the building, lot or land, of snow and ice before 9:00 a.m.each day.
The new ordinance also clarifies that every owner or occupant of lots or lands abutting any sidewalk, curb or gutter shall remove all snow and ice accumulated “promptly each day.”

Michigan neighborhood bands together to buy tractor, clear sidewalks: Could you?
(Cleveland.com) (Ed: Next move for our neighborhoods for public safety?)
The residents of an Ann Arbor, Michigan, neighborhood pooled together to buy a $43,000 tractor to plow their sidewalks.
More than a dozen signed up to drive their sidewalk snowplow, SnowBuddy, around the 1,000 homes of Water Hill after snowstorms. Another 25 residents serve as shovelers, clearing the piles of snow left behind.
Something important to think about with all of this snow
(From a community member)
Our kids are too precious and important for us not to teach them the proper rules for walking in the street when they can’t use the sidewalks. I have seen way too many kids walking with the cars on their way to school and that is just asking for (Chas V’Shalom) an accident.
When walking in the street we should walk against the traffic so that we can see what is coming and not just depend on our hat, ear muffed, and scarves ears to tell us what is coming behind us. It is also Ohio law. PLEASE go over these rules with your kids and more importantly model it when you are with them whether it is walking them to school or walking on Shabbos. They deserve to be taught.

Walmart – Don’t Give Up on Safety Just Because You Have a Lot of Shopping To Do
Just this past week, a community member was approached by a man in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter in South Euclid claiming to have a gun and attempting to steal her purse. Fortunately, he was unsuccessful and no one was seriously injured. No doubt incidents like this are frequent at this store that could easily have several arrests per day and has shocking crime statistics.
However this incident serves as a good reminder to our community to not take personal safety lightly! At this busy time when there is so much shopping to do, please continue to be careful about safety and consider the following. If you have more to share, please let us know in the comments. It is hoped that schools and shuls and families take the time to share this warning and come up with their own strategies.
- Avoid shopping alone at places like Walmart after dark
- If necessary, consider ways to protect yourself – Panic button on your vehicle’s key fob, mace, or other forms of self-defense
- Voice your concerns with:
