What Could be Wrong with the Steak?

August 1, 2013 1 Comment

meatSince the laws of kashrus and specifically of shechitah feature so significantly in this week’s parsha, I present:

What Could be Wrong with the Steak?

By Rabbi Yirmiyohu Kaganoff at rabbikaganoff.com

Question #1: Why don’t we use that hechsher?

When Yankel returns from kollel one day, his wife Miriam asks for his advice about the following situation. While visiting a neighbor, Miriam noticed her neighbor using a brand of meat that nobody she knows considers reliably kosher. “Should I tell her that her meat does not have a good hechsher?”

Halachos and Hashkafos of Bentching

July 29, 2013 Leave a Comment

breadsmall(Hakhel)

Because last week’s Parsha provides the great Mitzvah of Birkas HaMazon, we provide a review of certain Halachos and Hashkafos relating to it:

A. The following points and pointers are culled from the Dirshu Mishna Berurah:

 1.  If one finished his meal and washed Mayim Achronim, or picked up a Kos in order to lead bentsching, he can no longer eat and drink, and should not even speak (even Divrei Torah) until he has bentsched.  If the Ba’al HaBayis said “Let’s bentsch” and then someone wants to drink, he must make a new bracha on the drink.  If one wants to eat, it is a Machlokes Rishonim as to whether he must make a new bracha or not.  Accordingly, the Mishna Berurah rules that lechatchila one should be careful not to eat after the Ba’al HaBayis has said “Let’s bentsch”.

Mezuzah on a Rental By Rabbi Yirmiyohu Kaganoff

July 21, 2013 Leave a Comment

(RabbiKaganoff.com)

Question #1: Tenancy

“We rented a new apartment but did not put up mezuzos immediately, figuring that we had thirty days to do so. Someone told me that Rav Moshe held that we should put up mezuzos immediately. Is that true?”

Question #2: Temporary Dwelling

“When we went to visit our children in Ramat Beit Shemesh for two weeks, they had borrowed for us  a brand-new apartment that the owners themselves had not yet  used. I was surprised to see mezuzos on the doors already. My son-in-law explained that he put up mezuzos in the entire apartment, so that we could use it. Was he required to do so? I thought that one is not required to have mezuzos unless one lives in a place for at least a month.”

Where’s the Beef? – Eating Meat During the Nine Days

July 8, 2013 2 Comments

by Rabbi Yirmiyohu Kaganoff (Rabbi Yirmiyohu Kaganoff) rabbikaganoff.com/

Question #1: “A frum person invited me to a fleishig sheva berachos during the first days of Av. Can he make a sheva berachos and serve meat during this week? May I eat meat there?”

Question #2: “I am traveling during the Nine Days, and the airline serves me a fleishig meal. May I eat it?”

Question #3: “What should I do if I make a beracha on meat and then realize that it is the Nine Days and that I may not eat it?”

Special Tefillah for Parents Erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan

May 7, 2013 Leave a Comment

For recitation on erev Chodesh Sivan, this Thursday, May 9th.

The Shelah HaKadosh, composed a prayer that parents should recite for their children at any time of the year — but especially before Rosh Chodesh Sivan, for that is the month when G-d gave us the Torah, and when the Jewish people began to be called His Children.

Artscroll offers the following link of the complete prayer in Hebrew and English. Or here from tefillos.com.

The Mishna Berurah brings down that each day a parent should daven for not only himself, but that his children should have a portion in Torah. One should have this in mind in both bircas haTorah and U Va L’Tzion (l’mayan no liga larik).

Kollel Zichron Ephraim Heschel under the leadership of Rav Binyomin Forst, shlita, and approved by Rav Dovid Feinstein, shlita has produced a very clear poster with images of exactly where and how to cut hair, so as to avoid cutting the wrong section of the peyos. This is a full color poster which the author has made available for people to share, and even print out and post in their own shuls. Highly recommended! Download here.

Pesach Sheini

April 23, 2013 Leave a Comment

(Hakhel/ Repost)

Wednesday, April 24th  is Pesach Sheni. HaRav Yaakov Tzvi Emden, Z’TL (“the Yaavetz”) writes in his Siddur that:

“It was revealed to me from Heaven why Pesach Sheni was established on the 14th day of Iyar.  After all, it would not require more than two weeks for anyone who was impure or too far away on Pesach itself to come to Yerushalayim and bring the Pesach Sheni.  So, why wait a month from the 14th of Nissan to the 14th of Iyar–the Pesach Sheni could have already been brought by Rosh Chodesh Iyar?!”

When is it a “good idea” to have a double parsha?

March 3, 2013 Leave a Comment

gifts-children-toys-fun-stuff-sefer-torah-large-kjsftl-2327bigSince this week is the first of the “double parshiyos” we will be reading this year, I thought it appropriate to discuss:

Double Parshiyos

By Rabbi Yirmiyohu Kaganoff

When is it a good idea to have doubles?

Most doctors and other health professionals agree with the Rambam’s assessment that taking a double portion is not good for our health. Nevertheless, in most calendar years, our policy is to have several weeks when we read a double parsha so that we are able to complete the Torah every year and make a Siyum HaTorah on Simchas Torah.
